NOTES

I knit this sweater mostly to pattern. This was an excellent, easy knit that kept me knitting away.

FINAL THOUGHTS

• Classic, timeless knit

• Modifications were really important for me for this knit.

  • Size 4 (3.5mm) 40" circular needle (to obtain gauge after swatch was washed)

  • alternated cast on (between knit and purl cast on)

  • made the sleeves garter stitch (for contrast)

Purple Handspun "Zilver"

I love this project. There is something therapeutic and satisfying about using up some handspun yarn. The fiber is purple dyed 100% Merino roving.

Simple, classic, useful knit. Will probably knit again and again.

• Rough, back-of-the-envelope notes. Not tested or checked for accuracy.

  Vanilla

  • CO 16 stitches, Judy’s Magic Cast-On

  • R1: Knit around needle 1, knit into back loop needle 2

  • R2: Knit 1, M1R, knit to last two stitches, M1L, Knit 1 (for needle 1 and needle 2)

  • Repeat Rows 1 & 2, until there are 24 stitches both needles, 48 total

  • Knit around (both needles) until the foot measures 6 3/4” (knit up to Row 73) Row 74 choose heel side and begin gusset increases on one needle (M1R & M1L); Row 75 knit around both needlesRepeat rows 74 & 75 until increase needle has 46 stitches Row 99 - (after fleegle heel) & decreases, 12 rows of 2x2 rib aroundOn row 13, 2x2 rib loosely cast off with size 2.5 mm needles

METHOD

• Two-at-a-time

• Toe-up

• 1-"40 inch" circular needle, magic loop method

• 1 ball of yarn, knitting from both the center and the end of the yarn (outside of ball)

• Bind off with 1 needle size larger (2.5mm)

• [Next time] 48 stitches for the foot, but will need to increase to 56 stitches every other row after the heel

FINAL THOUGHTS

• Well-used finished object; possibly my most worn pair of socks (all seasons, indoors)

NOTES

Simple, cable repeat. Easily modified for toe-up construction.

• Cast On 16 stitches each needle, 32 total for the toes

• R1 - knit around * R2 - R5 K1, M1R, knit to last 2 stitches, M1L, K1 each needle

• R6-R19 - repeat rows 1-2, until 24 stitches each needle

• Start pattern chart R20 *4" to end of foot begin increase rows (back needle only), K, M1R, knit to two stitches until the end, M1L, K, every other row until 46 stitches are on back needle

• (if too soon for heel turn, knit in pattern front needle, and knit back no needle no increases)

• Fleegle heel

• continue to work pattern front needle, decrease back needle stitches to 24 stitches, and begin 1x1 rib for back of leg

• approx. 2" from desired cuff length 1x1 rib around, 11 rows, cast off with larger 3 mm needle, and weave in ends

MODIFICATIONS

• Toe-up, Two-at-a-time

• 1 Circular needle, 2.5 mm (US 1.5), 47"

• Increased until 24 stitches on each needle, 48 stitches

NOTES

Simple, lace repeat, cuff-down (top-down) sock.

Number of leaf repeats (so far): 3 leaf leg repeats; decreased 4 rows in a row at the heel immediately, and then switched to every other row; 3 leaf repeats foot; winged the toe switching between decrease rows and knit rows - sometimes doing decreases one after the other if it felt good on the foot; left 8 stitches before using Kitchener stitch to finish off the toe.

MODIFICATIONS

• Two-at-a-time, 1 circular needle (47")

• magic loop

• 2.25mm (US 1) needle

FINAL THOUGHTS

• Nice, free sock pattern. Possible future modifications: (1) Will use 2.5mm needle for cast on; (2) change to toe-up sock pattern.

MODIFICATIONS

• Try 1- (56 stitches, size S, US size 7.5 foot) on 2.25 mm needles. UPDATE: produces close-fitting sock

• Birch color - cuff, heel, toe

• Inkwell - colorwork contrast color

• Poppy Shop Yarn - main color Two-at-a-time, one circular needle, cuff down

• Knit all 50 rounds for leg.

• For heel; SL = purlwise

• 2/2/2020: For two-at-at-time, cuff-down - switched gusset decrease and toe decrease for one circular needle.

FINAL THOUGHTS

• Nice, free sock pattern. Possible future modifications: (1) swap toe pattern [chart B] for under cuff pattern; (2) change to toe-up sock pattern.

NOTES

I decided to knit these socks two-at-at-time toe up, even though the pattern was for cuff-down. I also made these socks over-the-knee. I made my own adjustments as I went, but I wish I had kept increases in the middle of the calf versus at each side. This caused the front pattern to shift in a way that I did not intend.

FINAL THOUGHTS

• If I make these again, keep increases at the center of calf versus at each side.

Speckled Fade "Zilver"

Classic, timeless pattern. Handspun friendly.

I increased the number of times that I completed the ridge pattern to 6; ended on a ridge pattern section versus stockinette section; knit 1 round & then cast-off; blocked top of shawl and corners more aggressively.

UPDATE 10/2020: This is my most worn shawl - the softness of the yarn, paired with the pattern are unbelievable. I need to make another. Surprisingly, no pilling even though it’s super soft single ply yarn.

FINAL THOUGHTS

• Definitely will make again with the same modifications above.

• Good pattern for handspun yarn.

NOTES

I picked up the loom from my local thrift shop for 85 cents. I considered it a fun find and I ordered 100% cotton loops from the Harrisville Designs website, as well as a replacement plastic crochet hook and a loop color card.

FINAL THOUGHTS

• I really enjoyed making these. And I loved the colors that I ordered: white, hydrangea, lavender, silver, and pewter.

• In the future, I think the following additional colors would be a nice addition: ochre, plum, burgundy, and dark navy.
